NATIONAL SOLAR SCHOOLS PROGRAM

CHALLENGE

The National Solar Schools Program commenced in July 2008 with the aim of providing funding for schools for installation of solar and other renewable power systems, solar hot water systems, rainwater tanks and other energy efficiency measures such as energy-efficient lighting and skylights.  Since its inception the program has provided over $128 million to over 2,800 schools across Australia.

 SOLUTION

As one of three preferred suppliers to the NSW Department of Education and Training, Solgen Energy has installed over 1MW of photovoltaic systems in government schools across NSW under the three funding rounds of the National Solar Schools Program so far.

Solgen Energy liaised directly with school Principals to deliver end-to-end solutions tailored to the unique needs of each individual school.   Solgen Energy delivered systems with the maximum possible output while adhering to the NSW government’s design specification, Australian Industry Standards and the Clean Energy Councils Code of Conduct.  Solgen Energy took control of all aspects of the installation process from planning and design through to installation and commissioning as well as providing training and support to school staff.

In the design and installation of each system Solgen Energy used only the highest quality components including Schott panels and SMA inverters.  Schott panels are recognized world leaders in durability and efficiency and consistently deliver higher yields when compared with other manufacturers.

In order to achieve the educational outcomes of the NSSP program a Data Collection, Storage and Visualisation Systems (DCSVS) package was included with each installation.  The SMA web-based monitoring installed allows staff and students to view real-time electricity generation data and thus provides a link with tangible learning outcomes.  Solgen Energy provided comprehensive support and training in the use of this monitoring system at the conclusion of each installation.

BENEFITS

The installation of photovoltaic systems provided numerous benefits to schools including:

Demonstrating to students and the wider community a tangible way to reduce their carbon footprint and providing a focus for energy saving initiatives at schools

Providing a platform for discussion for environmental issues and linking to relevant aspects of the school curriculum.

Reducing schools’ electricity consumption and consequent electricity bills

Reducing schools’ contributions to carbon dioxide  emissions and the enhanced greenhouse effect.

TESTIMONIAL

“Solgen Energy’s installation of solar panels  provides a great opporunity for education concerning renewabel energy sources. Solgen Energy was efficient  and professsional and kept the school informed at each stage. We are all excited about the potential for and students and for the school.”

(Julie Oliver, Head Teacher Science, Cronulla High School)

“We chose Solgen Energy to install our solar array because of their approach. All meetings and site works were carried out ina  highly professional manner. The product and warranties suited the schools situation and Solgen Energy provided training and support for the teachers using ‘Solar’ in their lesssons.”

(Daniel Low, Chair, Environment Committee, Epping Boys High School)

“Solgen Energy provided excellent service throughout conception, planning, installation and the final steps of bringing the system online.
